I turned the switch off, but continued to smell the burning smell and feel the heat. It would be expensive at a garage I expect, it took me a couple of days and if I ever wanted to do it again I think I could do it in one full day. I took my car in for the recall and this issue should have been resolved. The vehicle was pulled to the side of the road and the ignition was turned off. Although, the contact has not turned the heated seats on the coil continued to smoke and become heated while driving. I looked down and the seat warmer had burnt a two inch whole through my cloth seats, and burnt my jeans as well. It looked like a cigarette burn. Heating element is likely to cost in the region of Â£100+ then there's the cost of a new seat cover as well Right a bit of an update.
I started the car, turned the seat heater control from 0 to 5, and drove about 5 minutes from my brother's house to a hotel. It's interesting to see this on here, as the previous owner of my vehicle had exactly the same problem - even the leather is the same colour as mine! The seat heater had been on less than 1 minute. Consumer will contact dealer for repairs. As she looked down at her leg she saw flames coming out from a dime sized hole. Anybody had the same problem, and how many thousands of dollars will I need to get the problem fixed? Also check and make sure that there is not a blockage somewhere in the lines, Usually if there is there is a fine layer of ice surrounding it. Vw replaced the driver's seat heater with a recall.
The failure mileage was 79000 and the current mileage was 79200. I looked around and discovered it was the left side of the drivers seat. Immediately turned off seat heater, jumped out of car. I began to feel around the seat since I knew the seat warmer was on and suddenly realized that an area under my left thigh was hot. However, when questioned about the passenger seat being defective, it was explained that they have only had a problem with the driver seat. But I soon felt excessive heat on my buttocks and stopped the car, leaving it running. She had taken the car to the dealer because they were not driving on the highway they were not able to duplicate the failure.

The heating coil burned a hole in the seat, and burned the contact's leg. I turned the seat heater off and extinguished the smoldering seat. Car is still under warranty and dealership has been very helpful and was quite concerned, but can't replace parts right away parts had to be back ordered from germany. I would think that they used the same materials in both seats and that the reason there has not been a problem with the passenger seat is due to the possibility that it is not used as much. The heater inlet is in ther bulkhead on the passenger side, below the screen - it can be exposed by removing the push on clips for the plastic shield at the back of the engine bay. Would the heat shield have anything to do with heating the car? Turned off seat heater and got out of the car. At this point I pulled the vehicle over and got out. Prior to the failure, the vehicle was repaired according to the manufacturer's recall for the seats: heating system. I was on the highway with my wife and 7 year old son.
Try to flow water through, it doesn't have to be high pressure, and there should be a steady stream. I felt a hot spot in the left side of my seat and turned off the seat heater since my seat had warmed enough to be comfortable, but I did not think my seat was burning, so I continued on to my appointment. Several days later I turned the warmer back on to see what would happen - within 60 seconds smoke and sparks were visible from the hole caused by the original fire. This should only happen if the coolant goes low or someone has opened the system to service it. The driver's seat had the recall done some time ago, and now the seat warmer only works on 5. It seems to me that this is not only a defect, but also a safety hazard. This seems to be a relatively common failure based on the complaints that have been filed and is definitely a safety issue.
