This process generates an M4A-format audio file that the user can compare to the master, allowing processing to be optimized for iTunes. When Sony released a Mac version a few years ago it was substantially different: built from the ground up rather than being ported over, it was a little more feature-light than its Windows counterpart. That mode allows you to mix the audio, replace it, nudge it into place, etc. This makes it a much easier program to learn and operate in a day-to-day workflow. Sound forge for mac is real fail. Also new in version 3 are a few other goodies. The way Sound Forge presents its tools is still really nice, with channel meters and an info area as well as a configurable media browser all at your fingertips. As it stands, Sound Forge Mac is a good audio recorder and editor with a great interface. Unfortunately, the previous version of the app would often crash when in event mode.
I loved that feature for vocal takes, as well as long found-sound recordings. A single key creates Regions of the selected audio, shown in the Regions List on the left. As I said, I personally think the interface does a good job at making the app easy to use, but I know some Mac purists will hate it. I honestly can't figure it out. Magix have always managed to bring that condensed feeling to its software making it very intuitive and easy for the user. It's laid out quite a bit differently in a good way so it apppears that they started from scratch developing it.
The result was a decent sounding voice recording that I added to a Final Cut Pro X timeline. After installation and booting up Sound Forge for the first time, I was met with that very simple and humbling experience that was brought to me from earlier versions. And, for some reason, I could not get the space bar to consistently play a clip. They can be dragged from the list directly onto an audio clip for immediate processing like Audiosuite in Pro Tools or into the Plug-In Chain area. Control panel — Top Control panel — Bottom Something I found confusing was that transport controls are located at both the top of the interface and the bottom. For this review, I had the huge pleasure of taking a look at their latest release: Sound Forge Pro Mac 3.
Cons: Still relatively feature light for the price. This makes is easy to experiment with different ways of processing the sound, because you are not damaging the source file. Few of the tools seem to be available via right click when you have selected part of a clip, but they are available in the Process menu. It makes no sense to me that Volume adjustments appear under the Effects menu, while Fade Ins and Fade Outs appear under the Process menu. While new to the Mac, it is well-established in Windows.
This makes it easier to navigate through lengthy recordings. These can be viewed by category, vendor or type and the list is also searchable, which is a nice touch. There is particular dissatisfaction that the bulk of Magix's effort seems to have been directed at negotiating with 3rd parties iZotope in particular to provide plug-ins. Sound Forge Pro Mac finally becomes the sound editor with the ability to load audio streams of video files. I'm an iZotope fan, but I already have full versions of the reduced-capability included plug-ins. Both these and other tools give you the option of looping the part you've selected, which can be useful when making finer adjustments. In Time mode, edits are made in the usual way, selecting regions within an audio clip for cutting, copying, pasting, processing, etc.
The Mac version of the Sound Forge Pro audio editor has always lived under the shadow of its older and stronger Windows sibling, and previous users of Sound Forge Pro Mac complained of stability problems and too few features. That has been one of my biggest issue to move forward with the purchase, since I now have a 2 computer work-flow for mostly everything. Sound Forge is to me what Photoshop is to a photographer. I jumped right in and cross graded to Mac. For now, while it lacks some features of its Windows counterpart, it does what it does quite well. It looked as though the program was going to die on the vine when Sony abandoned it, but Magix took many by surprise when it assumed ownership of the Sound Forge line in 2016. Part Of The Process As well as audio recording, editing and analysis, Sound Forge is adept at processing your sounds and you get a range of tools to help you to achieve this.
